Working for Coplan Estates, Dexter Moren Architects has drawn up plans for a new tower in Barking inspired by sliced fruit.

Overlooking Wakering Road, the scheme is planned to stand on a slender site running from west to east on the other side of Barking Station from HLM's Cambridge Road tower that was featured in yesterday's Skyscrapernews.

The design features a sixteen floor tower element standing above a six level podium that expands to fill the entire site. Filling the podium will be a mixture of commercial space and affordable housing plus an entire level for gardens. This has been drawn up to continue the roofline from the neighbouring building of Trocoll House.

The main vertical section of the building is residential and connected to the podium by columns holding the bulk of its weight up with the service shaft visible in the centre as it spans between the two sections. It's designed to be as slender as possible to maximise the sunlight from the south-facing views whilst the slanting edge conceals balconies within providing outside space.

Looking at how to shape the tower, Dexter Moren took numerous different fruit including peaches, tomatoes and red peppers and sliced small sections off them looking at the shape of what was left using this as a cue for the organic profile of the tower.

Environmentally hugging features include a bank of solar panels fitted to the south side of the tower, the area that gets the maximum sunlight, winter gardens for the affordable apartments turning them into double-skinned residential accommodation and insulating them from the noise of the nearby railway, and several wind turbines on the top of the tower.
