The wraps have come off property company, Minervas, plans for high-rise regeneration of the Ram Brewery site in Wandsworth, south western London.

The scheme has been designed by EPR Architects. It is dominated by the two large elliptical residential towers planned to stand on the north western portion of the site rising to 32 and 42 storeys respectively which translates into 145.5 metres above ground level with the shorter tower at 114 metres.

Dominated by a light touch, the twin towers will have stainless steel, opaque windows and extensive glass curtain walling. As with many residential towers with oval floor-plates from the Ontario Tower onwards, they are topped by lip-stick like sloping roofs.

A series of other residential blocks are also included in the plans including a part-9, part-16 storey tower 51 metre tall building overlooking Armoury Way that stands above underground parking.

In a nod to the existing listed buildings, the existence of which could scupper development if English Heritage get their way, is the inclusion in the proposals of the protected Stable Block that will be retained and refitted in a conversion favourable to their original historical condition.

The development comprises of 831 new residential units of which 207 will be social housing. There is also 12,204 square metres of new retail space planned, 2,226 square metres of office space and underground car-parking for 492 vehicles.

What Wandsworth make of this latest scheme remains to be seen but combined with almost equally tall plans for Clapham Junction, and even Will Alsop's proposals for Putney, it seems that the wind of change could be blowing through the borough with developers finally daring to propose truly tall buildings.
