Romford Leisure Centre Set For Overhaul

    Published on 30-07-2008 by Skyscrapernews.com
Proposals have been put forward for a new leisure centre and general redevelopment for Romford on the outskirts of London.

Aptly named the Romford Leisure Centre, the scheme is the work of architectural firm HLM Architects and will be spread across six separate zones that will radiate from the new leisure.

To be built in three phases, the scheme is marked by a gateway tower at the main entrance to the area that will rise 26 storeys, easily enough to be the tallest building in Romford. A number of lower-rise blocks are also included in the proposals on the northern part of the site housing approximately 750 new homes.

Notable is a line of modern terraces that with front and back gardens that form a part of phase 3 and offer some traditional English family housing as a counterpoint to the apartments which the bulk of the scheme consists of.

Filling much of the sourthern portion of the plot, the leisure centre will house facilities for water and ice based sports as well as well as spaces for a gym and a dance studio.

There will also be office space, hotel and extensive shopping space set around the central pedestrian spine to go melt the credit cards in making the scheme almost like a small suburb of a suburb.

Transport links to the site are already fairly good and the architects seem keen to build on the road access by providing generous amounts of underground parking.

Outside space is heavily delivered. Whilst some of the buildings will have roof top gardens that give a hint to the sustainability of the scheme, much thought has been given to the pedestrian permeability between the blocks that will open up numerous routes through the site in the form of tree-lined boulevards and more open green-space. Residents will also be able to enjoy enclosed courtyards.
