HAI PHONG – Northern Hai Phong City Police have prosecuted six people for alledgedly violating work safety regulations which resulted in a shoe workshop fire in An Lao District's Tan Dan Commune last Friday. The fire killed 13 workers and injured 25.
The suspects include landlords, Bui Thi Su, 44,ï and Bui Duc Lang,49, the workshop owners, Bui Thi Thu Hien, 24, her Chinese husband and two welders.
Investigation proved the fire to have been triggered by the welding of cinders for lightening-conductors on the workshop' roof while about 44 people were inside working.
Ten of the 13 deaths have been identified, while the three others were not due to severe physical disfigurement. The seventeen injured workers are at Kien An Hospital and Viet Tiep Hai Phong Hospital, as well as the Ha Noi based National Burn Institute.
Chairman of the city's People's Committee, Duong Anh Dien visited the hospitals on Saturday, and to support the victims' families, awarded VND5-10 million (US$240-490) each.
