Renewable energy is all the rage these days with micro generation being a particularly well talked about concept.

Commissioned by Blyth + Blyth, ESA Architects have dreamed up this self contained power-station for a new development in east London to generate power for nearby buildings from non carbon sources.

ESA has taken a disused warehouse and played on the power stations that used to run on the River Thames such as Bankside adding a modern twist to industrial design.

The scheme will be clad in Corten Steel, a weathered metallic material with hints of rust that the architect hopes will resemble a ship's hull. From the north-west, a structure similar to a chimney rises up and merges with the corner creating a fusion between the prow of a ship and an old style power station.

Gaps in the steel will accommodate glass and reveal the inside of the building making an inclusive, rather than closed-off design. Cut-outs also feature with engraved shapes adding floral patterns to portions of the building.

Located off White Post Lane, the Visitors Centre has a central auditorium in the middle of it coloured red and sitting there like an abandoned tulip bulb. Glass walls separate the visitors centre from the biomass boilers next door whilst walkways connect it to the main power centre.

The hope is that this will allow the general public to see this technology in operation and realise just how the future can be non-carbon with a little bit of effort and a few policy changes from central government.
