Hamiltons Plan 16 Storey Waterloo Hotel

Following on from commercial success with an Apart Hotel next to Waterloo Station, owner of the General Lying in Hospital almost next door plans on getting in on the act with a hotel of their own.

Although designed this time by Hamiltons instead of BUJ the scheme is more of the same with a chunky part 13 part 16 storey building with 246 bedrooms that will overlook York Road.

As with the Apart Hotel it has a monochromatic checkerboard façade on its frontage that does at least relate well to the hotel behind it, although given the poor response that building has had this is perhaps not the best route as the last thing the thoroughly dull Waterloo needs is such an uninspiring architectural vernacular evolving in the area.

Combined with the hotel behind the listed in Lying in Hospital, the end result seems to be both blocks combining into one and overwhelming the neo-classical building, particularly when viewed from the public square behind London's City Hall.

The architects have attempted to make a visual distinction between each of the different elements of the building by cladding them in different materials separating it into very visible sections.

Utilising ceramic and aluminium panels plus a dollop of vertical louvres to reduce solar gain on the concrete they will stand over the idea is to create a verticality by making the different elements as slender as possible despite the overall squatness of the building envelope.

As well as the overshadowing of a listed building, there is also bound to be concerns that the building will have an effect on the Westminster World Heritage Site although a number of similarly scaled blocks exist around it already like 75-79 York Road. This is something the developers will have to deal with if they are to proceed further with their plans and not ride into the same sort of storm Elizabeth House did.
