Liverpool Show Off New Football Stadium Design

Liverpool Football Club have shown off the latest design for their new stadium set to stand in Stanley Park and replace the famous Anfield.

Designed by HKS and master-planned by The Planit Group, the scheme breaks away from the currently in vogue bowl design that new Premier League stadiums favour by using something more asymmetrical.

The scheme will cost a total of about £300 million and see the capacity of Liverpool Football increase from 42,000 to 60,000. The stand out part of the crowd accommodation is a single tier area of seating that will have an enormous 18,000 seats in it.

Of particular external note is the west side of the project that has a sweeping glass concave frontage curving gently inwards whilst the south-east and south west corners of the stadium will be open exposing the stainless steel horse-shoe shaped structure and providing views from the outside in.

This takes advantage of one of the main weaknesses of the bowl design that basically means what you build is what you get with little chance for further expansion. In having unfilled corners with more traditional north, south, east and west stands there is always opportunity expand capacity in these open areas.

Regeneration of the area goes further than just the stadium with hopes that the old Bootle Branch railway line which is near the site could be reopened to not only provide a rail link straight to the ground but help the urban renewal of northern Liverpool.

Liverpool Football Club hope to get a quick approval by the local council of the scheme and have the stadium finished for its first match at the new Kop in 2010.
