Boom Town

A new brightly coloured development could soon be the latest scheme in the gradual transformation of Kingston Upon Hull after the refusal of previous plans.
Having reworked the scheme named The Boom for developer Pure Urban Limited, Chetwoods has created a revised design that keeps the basic essence of the earlier version whilst responding to the council's concerns about the previous plans.
As before there are four blocks lined up and overlooking the east bank of the River Hull. The tallest of these is a tower with a sloping roof that responds to the sharp corner on the edge of the site. It rises to roughly 58 metres with seventeen floors above ground. Two of the other blocks are twelve floors with the shortest being eleven.
The ground level will include retail outlets set around the public spaces to create a bustling new shopping area whilst residents will be able to enjoy undercroft parking.
The public spaces between the blocks are now larger thanks to a realigning of the buildings whilst a terrace between the two middle blocks has been removed opening up this space somewhat.
There is also more colour in the scheme now with blue glass set behind white concrete and bright green balconies peppering the sides of the buildings that can provide residents with outside space and passers-by with a catching landmark.
This area of Hull is become a tight development spot with an 11 floor hotel under construction immediately behind it on Tower Street and a number of future but as yet unproposed developments also promised for the area.
Whether The Boom joins it remains to be seen, but the developers will be hoping that this time their plans are good enough for Hull City Council's planning committee to approve them so they can finally get on with it.
